Web browser download help
Issue
If you receive an error message during a download, or are unable
to install a downloaded file, it is likely that the download did not
complete, or was corrupted. Use the following information to
identify and resolve the problem.
You may be able to download faster if you avoid peak
download hours.
Common causes and solutions for unsuccessful
downloads
The download files can become corrupt if you are using a dial-up connection to attempt to download the AVG program. Due to the large size of the file (25+MB) and the instability in the dial-up connection, many times the file may appear to be stopped or paused and this could result in a corrupt file.
We highly recommend a broadband connection for our AVG program downloads.
There are a number of reasons why you might see the following
types of behaviours during the download process:
- You receive an error message
- The web browser hangs
- You receive an error message when you try to open
the downloaded file
If you find that the file you've downloaded is corrupt, re-downloading may solve the problem, but check the following
issues and solutions to see if they may apply:
- The temporary internet file cache is too small to contain
the file as it downloads.
- Enlarge the temporary internet file cache: In Internet
Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab >
Temporary Internet Files > Settings, and increase the Amount
Of Disk Space To Use setting to 150 MB. (The default is 50
MB.)
- You are using a download manager or download accelerator.
- Download without the assistance of the manager or
accelerator.
- The browser you are using cannot handle such a large
download file.
- try downloading the software with a different browser. For example, if you're using Internet Explorer, try downloading our software with a more-reliable browser, such as Mozilla Firefox
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/.
- There is not space available on your drive to expand the
installer into the default TEMP directory.
- Clear your default TEMP directory and free up space on
your hard drive.
- You are selecting Open rather than Save when asked if you
would like to open the file or save to your computer.
- Select the option to Save the file, then open the file
when it has downloaded to your hard drive.
- Your computer may not have the system requirements needed to
install.
- Check the system requirements linked on the relevant AVG
Edition. You may need to upgrade your system or
download the trial on another machine.
- If you are using a Modem you may need to decrease the
transmission speed.
- There is a software conflict with third party software.
- You may need to remove the conflicting software (eg.
If you have AVG FREE or
another vendor's anti-virus product installed on your
computer you must UNINSTALL it before
installing AVG Trial Edition. [Programs can be uninstalled
via the Start menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
> AVG Free > Remove] or
download the trial on another machine.
- Try using an alternate computer with a broadband connection (eg. a friend or work computer), and either burn onto a CD-ROM or download to a flash drive.
- One problem is that most web browsers cache recent downloads, which means they keep copies to make subsequent downloads faster. But, if your download was corrupt, your cached copy will be corrupt as well. This means that you'll have to clear your browser cache before attempting to download again.
In Win XP,
to solve this issue, please try to
remove the content of Temporary Internet Files (open Internet
Explorer ->Tools menu -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet
Files section -> Delete Files button -> Delete All Offline
Content). For other operating systems, refer to your browser's documentation for details.
- If you're using a software-based firewall (such as Norton Personal Firewall), this can interfere with downloads, especially with Internet Explorer 5.0/6.0. Disable your firewall temporarily and try again.
- This problem can also be caused by an unreliable Internet connection. Remember, the connection between your computer and our server is not simply handled by your DSL, cable, or dial-up service - that's only one link in a very long chain.
- If you only have dial-up access to the Internet, let us know - we will send you the file via mail on
CD-ROM format for a
small nominal fee.

Decrease the data transmission speed before
downloading in windows
To decrease the data transmission speed before downloading in
windows, do the following steps:
- Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel and open Modems.
- Click Properties and click the Connection tab.
- Click Port Settings and bring the Receive Buffer slider down
a notch.
- Hit OK and try your download again.
- Once your file has been successfully received, you can go
back in and increase the buffer settings back to where they
were.
Maintaining continuous Internet connectivity using a dial-up modem
On many dial-up connections, downloading traffic is not recognized as Internet traffic, so the dial-up connection times out and disconnects. To stop your dial-up connection from disconnecting during a download, change your dial-up settings to never time out. Refer to the help documentation provided by your Internet service provider (ISP) or operating system on how to set your dial-up connection time outs.
For example, to set up the modem software provided by Windows XP to never time out:
1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections.
2. Right-click on your Dial-Up connection, and choose Properties.
3. Click the Options tab.
4. Select Never for the Idle Time Before Hanging Up setting.
5. Click OK.
If your modem continues to disconnect while downloading, contact your Internet provider for additional tips on how to keep your connection.
Download time based on individual systems
It is difficult to determine the exact amount of time it takes to
download a file because there are many factors that can affect the
download speed, such as connection type and network traffic.
Assuming that you have a ADSL connection or faster, you can download
most AVG products in less than 5 minutes.
For more information on estimated download times, refer to the
table in
Estimated download time.
